ՏԱՐՕՆ ԱՃԷՄՕՂԼՈՒ ԱՐԺԱՆԱՑԱՒ MIT-Ի ԲԱՐՁՐԱԳՈՅՆ ԿՈՉՄԱՆ – Daron Acemoglu Named Institute Professor, MIT’s Highest Faculty Honor.

MASSISPOST

CAMBRIDGE, MA (MIT news) –Economist Daron Acemoglu, whose far-ranging research agenda has produced influential studies about government, innovation, labor, and globalization, has been named Institute Professor, MIT’s highest faculty honor.

Acemoglu is one of two MIT professors earning that distinction in 2019. The other, political scientist Suzanne Berger, has been named the inaugural John M. Deutch Institute Professor.

Acemoglu and Berger join a select group of people holding the Institute Professor title at MIT. There are now 12 Institute Professors, along with 11 Institute Professors Emeriti. The new appointees are the first faculty members to be named Institute Professors since 2015.

“As an Institute Professor, Daron Acemoglu embodies the essence of MIT: boldness, rigor and real-world impact,” says MIT President L. Rafael Reif. “From the John Bates Clark Medal to his decades of pioneering contributions to the literature, Daron has built an exceptional record of academic accomplishment. And because he has focused his creativity on broad, deep questions around the practical fate of nations, communities and workers, his work will be essential to making a better world in our time.”

In a letter sent to the MIT faculty today, MIT Provost Martin A. Schmidt and MIT Chair of the Faculty Susan Silbey noted that the honor recognizes “exceptional distinction by a combination of leadership, accomplishment, and service in the scholarly, educational, and general intellectual life of the Institute and wider community.” Schmidt and Silbey also cited Acemoglu’s “significant impacts in diverse fields of economics” and praised him as “one of the most dedicated teachers and mentors in his department.”

A highly productive scholar with broad portfolio of research interests, Acemoglu has spent more than 25 years at MIT examining complicated, large-scale economic questions — and producing important answers.

“I’m greatly honored,” he says. “I’ve spent all my career at MIT, and this is a recognition that makes me humbled and happy.”

Acemoglu has authored or co-authored over 120 (and still rapidly counting) peer-reviewed papers. His fifth book, “The Narrow Corridor,” co-authored with Robinson, will be published in September. It takes a global look at the development of, and pressures on, individual rights and liberties. He has advised over 60 PhD students at MIT and is known for investing considerable time reading the work of his colleagues.

As a student, Acemoglu received his BA from the University of York, and his MSc and PhD from the London School of Economics, the latter in 1992. His first faculty appointment was at MIT in 1993, and he has been at the Institute ever since. He was promoted to full professor in 2000, and since 2010 has been the Elizabeth and James Killian Professor of Economics.

Daron Acemoglu is a Istanbul-born Armenian-American economist who has taught at the MIT since 1993. He is currently Elizabeth and James Killian Professor of Economics at MIT.

Musurlian Wins Third Emmy Award

..Peter Musurlian won his third Los Angeles Area Emmy on July 27

Independent journalist Peter Musurlian won his third Los Angeles Area Emmy on Saturday at the Academy of Television Arts & Science’s Saban Media Center in North Hollywood.
The 52-minute documentary, “Holocaust Soliloquy,” ran on Los Angeles PBS station KLCS in May 2018, winning the Emmy in the Independent Programming Category.
Earlier this year, Musurlian, who shot, wrote, and edited the entire film, won a First Place Los Angeles Press Club Award for Best Videography, beating out two entries from the powerhouse KCET team.
The documentary can be found online, and Musurlian’s Emmy speech is available below:
Musurlian won his first Emmy in 2012, for a 30-minute (solo) documentary, Burbank’s African Sister City, which he shot, wrote, narrated, and edited. In 2016, Musurlian, and a team from The Burbank Channel, won Emmys for their various roles in the production of the Mayor’s State-of-the-City video.
Musurlian, who was born in Wisconsin and raised in Torrance, received his bachelor’s degree from USC, and master’s degrees from Baylor University, American University, and the University of Redlands. He has had 10 Emmy nominations since 2002 and has won 24 Golden Mikes from the Radio & Television News Association of Southern California.
Growing up, Musurlian attended St. James Armenian Apostolic Church. In 1983, he interned at ABC News in Washington, D.C., as part of the Armenian Assembly Intern Program. From 2006 to 2009, he sat on the Board of Directors of the Armenian National Committee of America, Western Region.
Among more than 20 Armenian-themed projects Musurlian has produced over the last 20 years are: The Long Journey from the NFL to Armenia (2006), Historic Armenia (2015), and The 100-Year-Old Survivor (2015), which all ran on KLCS in Los Angeles. You can see them, and much more, online.
Peter Musurlian mentions the Armenian Genocide during his Emmy speech
Among certain members of the Armenian Community, Musurlian is perhaps best known for his hard-hitting coverage of Members of Congress Jean Schmidt of Ohio and Steve Cohen of Tennessee, as well as California Assemblyman Mike Gatto, who all, to varying degrees, exhibited hostility toward Armenians and/or Armenian issues.
A former congressional aide, Musurlian has worked at television stations in Montana, Texas, Burbank, and Washington, D.C. He also served for eight months as a U.S Army broadcast journalist in Central Europe in the late 1990s, where he met his Hungarian wife, Szilvia.
He is editing his latest documentary, Genocide March Revisited, while working and living in Northern Virginia with his wife and teenage daughter, June Petra, the 2017 Los Angeles County Spelling Bee champion.

ABOUT

Globalist Films was formed in 2005, as a one-person, independent production company, eschewing the trend toward media consolidation and ratings-influenced journalistic sensationalism. The result has been award-winning, lucid, engaging, and unbiased stories, driven by an uncompromising and fierce independence.

The founder of Globalist Films, Peter Musurlian (born December 12, 1961) is an American independent documentary filmmaker, known for his [mostly solo] short-form and long-form stories, videos, and documentaries, which he shoots, writes, narrates, and edits.

He has a substantial body of pro bono work, as well as award-winning documentaries, that have been seen on Los Angeles television, including: Historic Armenia, Burbank’s African Sister City, Holocaust Soliloquy, The 100-Year-Old Survivor, and The Long Journey from the NFL to Armenia. His entire catalog can be reviewed on this website. After airing on television, Musurlian makes most of his films available, free of charge, on YouTube.

Nationally renowned lawyer Mark Geragos, who was covered by the veteran journalist at a 2009 Ohio political hearing, calls Musurlian “aggressive and persistent,” as well as dubbing his 2015 documentary on a genocide survivor: “a one-man tour de force of original throwback reporting that unfortunately is almost extinct in today’s world.”

Musurlian has won two Los Angeles Area Emmys. He has also garnered, since 1999, nine Los Angeles Area Emmy nominations, as well as 24 Golden Mikes, awarded by the Radio & Television News Association of Southern California. Additionally, he has been nominated six times for his documentary work by the Los Angeles Press Club, which recognizes journalistic excellence in the second largest media market in the USA.

Musurlian was born in Racine, Wisconsin and raised in North Torrance, California.  He’s the son of a Wisconsin-born aerospace-industry draftsman [John Musurlian, 1930-1998] and Istanbul-born nurse and mother of four [Araksi Bedrosyan, 1930-1998]. Musurlian’s grandparents survived the Armenian Genocide of 1915 to 1923, which was successfully executed by the Turkish government, killing more than 1.5 million, while another half million scattered around the globe, creating (some 100 years later) a large and vibrant Armenian Diaspora.

Musurlian began his journalism career writing for his high school newspaper and serving as editor in chief of his community college newspaper. He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern California in Broadcast Journalism & Political Science, as well as master’s degrees from Baylor University (Political Science), American University (Journalism & Public Affairs) and the University of Redlands (Management).

The U.S. Army veteran spent almost a year in Central Europe, from 1997 to 1998, reporting for Armed Forces Network television. His journalism career has also taken him to television stations in Montana, Texas, Burbank, and Washington, D.C.  In 1988, he produced “John McLaughlin’s One on One,” a D.C.-based interview program seen on more than 100 PBS stations.

While serving in the U.S. Army in Hungary in 1998, Musurlian married the former Szilvia Eva Gadanyi. They are raising their only child together, June Petra Musurlian, who was born in December 2004.

“My documentaries try to capture a contemporary current of events, out in the real world, away from sedentary, air-conditioned comfort. I’m not interested in producing the video equivalent of a footnote-laden graduate-school term paper that is slightly better than a PowerPoint presentation.”

– Peter Musurlian
